Led by his passion for bridging disciplines, Mark has been fortunate to work with an incredibly diverse group of people across a wide range of fields.
Trained as a lawyer and investment banker, Mark spent eleven years as a fixed income securities trader and then sales executive, covering some of the largest portfolio managers in the country including Morgan Bank, Putnam, Western Asset Management and BGI (Bill Gates Investments). Upon hearing the drumbeat of technology, however, he left Sanwa Bank in New York as its youngest EVP and moved to San Francisco in 1994 - the year the Web was born.
There he launched beaming, llc. (1995), a new media venture consulting firm in San Francisco, advising technology and telecommunication companies like NTT on the acquisition of media properties. He also produced a critically acclaimed lecture/performance series called New Minds that brought digerati like Jeff Hawkins and Bruce Sterling to ruminate on the impact of technology on society and culture. This led to the formation of an art, science and technology network called Creative Disturbance (1999), one of the early web-empowered social networks that connected people by tagging their interests.
Seeing the potential to leverage both technology and his financial experience for social enterprise, he co-founded Collective Intelligence in 2001 and xigi.net in 2005 to help catalyze the emerging capital market for good. xigi provides is a market discovery platform for guiding, educating and connecting investors to investments with social entrepreneurs. Mark also acts as an advisor to Good Capital a new private equity fund for the social capital market.
Finally, drawn to the art world by artists fluent in technology and the raw power of creative expression, Mark formed artbeam.net in 2003, to work closely with a handful of artists in the creation, exhibition and promotion of their work.
