Law Librarianship
(Libraries industry)
February 2007 — Present (2 years 10 months)
Primarily an administrative post; managing the Society’s finances, membership records, and library. Also arrange training and social events. This position enabled me to obtain my personal goal of returning to Aberdeen but is not fully utilising my librarianship skills. I am a “people person” and this position requires me to work in a building on my own for the majority of the time. An example of the projects this has enabled me to complete is the set up of a website, including planning and writing the content.

Main role of position was to provide a first class enquiry service to the Advocates, and other library users. This was done with the support of a team of four full time library assistants. Supervision of six part time students who shelved books and carried out a photocopying service was also involved. Also responsible for providing user training: on the library, services provided, and the use of electronic resources available to members and staff. Managed a budget for monograph acquisitions and kept overview of missing items. In 2004 the Faculty introduced Performance Management for all full time staff which was an interesting procedure to be part of. On departure was working with the library assistants on a goal to improve our team work. This made a huge difference to daily operations. Managing the changes ensuring the whole team was happy throughout the procedure was quite a challenge.
