NIWC - National Institute for Women of Color - was a national women of color coalition founded by the Black American human resources professional and social activist Sharon Parker. In 1988 NIWC sponsored the very first Women of Color Day celebration. The Institute was direcfed by a board of about 15 Black American, Native American, Latina, Asian American and Pacific Islander women. NIWC sponsored conferences and research, including a widely read and quoted series of occasional papers known as The Brown Papers.
