I joined the Internet and new media industry in the early 90s, when it was in its infancy. I worked in and helped build several major national and multinational ISPs during the web hosting boom, before eventually moving on to work as a freelance performance and security expert.
I have been with Vodafone since 2001 having joined Vizzavi as a specialist troubleshooter to help them with their high profile "PopIdol" service. Under my guidance the service, which had previously failed to sustain the exceptionally high demand generated by the show, both excelled and entered the record book with one of the highest website hit rates ever recorded (28.5 Million hits in on half hour). After "PopIdol" i moved on to become on of the key architects and integration leaders building and ultimately rolling out the groundbreaking "Vodafone Live!" portal and its exceptional portfolio of services.
Since 2001 my role within Vodafone has evolved to also include my security skills and I am now titled as the performance and security authority for Vodafone UK Telecoms Systems.
In my current role I am responsible for reviewing and challenging all new services from both a performance and a security perspective.
I also sit on a number of group security forums where i am responsible for defining group security strategy and guiding Vodafone's adaption to an ever changing threat landscape.
My view of how security should be managed is both a proactive one and a positive one. I do not feel that security should be used as a blocker, but rather as an enabler that when used correctly enhances systems and services by giving people a degree of trust and safety.
I have given lectures on security, and have worked as an advisor to several major TV networks including the US networks CNN and National Geographic, and Channel 4 and the BBC in Britain.
Most recently I have worked as technical advisor and on screen security guru for BBC's "The Real Hustle".
