Marcel Sorger’s Summary

There are a lot of topics I'm interested in. They range from hard core coding to psychology and management.
Throughout university, in my proffesion as well as other aspects of my life I always tried to understand how things worked and influenced each other, both in tactical and strategic ways.
As an analyst and developer this helps me to design and create systems that fulfill business needs now and in the future. These interests have also given me a extensive knowledge of computer systems as well as a understanding of the IT sector as a whole.
This understanding makes me ideally suited as an architect, because it helps me make technical choices that can satisfy business demands now and in the future.

Effective communication skills and political insight help me keep my projects moving in the right direction. Seeing all sides of a problem is critical for creating the optimum solution.
Possessing creativity and down to earth logic enables me to come up with unconventional but practical solutions.
Professionally I am always trying to sharpen my skills and to learn new technologies.

To create a quality solution I always try to balance the requirements of management, users, engineers and developers. Most requirements in the SPECTRUM dimensions witch stands for Secure, Performant, Elegant, Configurable, Transparent, Robust, Usable and Maintainable. Normally not all the stakeholders get what they want, but they all get what they need.

Architecture is key to any successful solution. Whether it’s an OO design with Patterns or a SOA, I’m always trying to achieve “Lose coupling, high cohesion”.

Talent 4 MS development
I currently specialize in .NET development. The ever increasing framework make a solid foundation for any application. The new features and tooling have the potential to revolutionize the development process, making it easier to collaborate with many different stakeholders creating a better and more cost effective solution.

Integer is a consultancy firm. It's been around for 30 years and is a part of Ordina. Because of it's long existance it has lots of experiance and good benefits. It seems to attract a lot of outspoken no-nonsense people.

Because it's a greenfield app and the focus group is young people new tech can be tried out. It uses Ubraco CMS, XSLT, JQuery and .NET 3.5.
I also created a way to autenticate with the Hyves OpenID provider and create profile based on data from Hyves OpenAuth/OpenSocial.

  • Developer

    Fortis Corporate Insurance NV

    (Insurance industry)

    September 2008May 2009 (9 months)

Developing in C#. First fixed and finished an app payments in VS2003 with a lot of messy code. Second created an app to match insurance payments and insurance payments due in VS2005. Thirdly started a rebuild of te first app in VS2005 using NHibernate. NHibernate made it easier to develop but figuring out what the old app did exacly took al lot more time than anticipated.

  • Analyst/Developer

    Interpolis

    (Public Company; Insurance industry)

    July 2007August 2008 (1 year 2 months)

Did functional analys and design for a pension servicedesk covering changes needed for the new pensionrules.
Created UML use cases and activety diagrams as a means to document the application as well as, to create a baseline where a rebuild could be measured by.
Researched and optimized SQL stored procedures to boost performance.
Helped rebuild the website in C#.NET 3.0 optimizing it for performance and making it web standards compliant.

  • Webdeveloper

    Corus Staal BV

(Public Company; 10,001 or more employees; Mining & Metals industry)

    March 2006February 2007 (1 year )

Did multiple projects for the web department of Corus Steel.
All the projects used ASP.Net and used lots of javascript and later on AJAX, to mimic a windows appication as much as possible.
From a usability perpective this was great, but planning was almost impossible. To smoothen the development proces I first tried to document the development proces by creating flow charts and Faq's later on I converted that knowledge into reusable components and tools.

  • Developer

    Corus Staal BV

(Public Company; 10,001 or more employees; Mining & Metals industry)

    October 2005March 2006 (6 months)

Helped creating a warehouse management system for Corus Steel. The newly build harbor magazine needed a new logistical system for moving roles of steel with crane's on and off trains and ships.
UML modeling was used for analysis and design.
The application used WinForm.NET and a layered architecture.

  • Developer

    Independer

    (Privately Held; Financial Services industry)

    August 2005September 2005 (2 months)

Short project to implement a questionair in a generic way.
Technicaly it was a great project with the most elaborate UML ever. Unfortunatly it had a too optimistic planning.
The project was more complex then I anticipated, mainly because their were so much unexpected details that didn't fit the original architecture. The project manager had zero experiance so there where no margins. I felt responsible and tried to fix it by working more. I did finish the project in a reasonably on time, but I hope I never have to do that again.

  • Developer/Analyst

    Tango42

    (Partnership; 1-10 employees; Internet industry)

    January 2005July 2005 (7 months)

Started a datingsite with some friends. Unfortunatly it laked funds and a clear direction. I provided psygology and analisys input but when they wanted me to invest in a marketing campaign to go up against the big sites, I bailed.
A datingsite is a cross between a community site and a pick-up bar. Just like it's possible to start a new bar even if there are bigger bars out there, it's possible to start a new datingsite. You just need to target a niece market like mooiemensen.nl or change the business model like the free relatieklik.nl not do the same thing as everybody else.

  • Developer

    Arlanet BV

(Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Computer Software industry)

    August 2004January 2005 (6 months)

Developed a application for freelancers called Isaris.
It should have automated the overhead that freelancers have.
The idea was to do a lot of things a little bit. having a single cockpit where you could find all the administration aspects of a freelancer. Things like CRM, document managment, project management, bookkeeping etc. are all done by freelancers but not as extensivly as a large organisation. We even developed a sidebar simular to the windows sidebar with stock quotes and multimedia playback.

  • Developer

    Team Sigma

(Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Computer Games industry)

    August 2000January 2001 (6 months)

Intership creating an editor for a 3D game using C++ in VS6 and Borland Builder and UML in Rational Rose focusing on design patterns and other advanced technologies. Basicly I aimed to create a flexable and reusable framework for games without compromising performance. I was ahead of the curve, because currently MS is creating XNA on the .NET framework to do exacly that.

  • Helpdesk medewerker

    Pecoma Informatica

(Public Company; 201-500 employees; Computer Networking industry)

    July 1997January 2001 (3 years 7 months)

  • Developer

    Lost Boys

(Public Company; 201-500 employees; Computer Software industry)

    August 1999January 2000 (6 months)

Internship developing an add on for a 3D world called Sterrenkind in C++. It was one of the first MMORPG's ever created and aimed at sick children in hospitals. Originaly a research project together with Microsoft, utilising the very latest in 3D, Database, network and PC technologie. Meaning in that day 3dfx cards, 333Mhz procesors, 100Mbit network cards. It turned into a prestige project ballooning from 3 to 15 people to make the deadline. I got the project a year after it's release, when everybody else had moved on. I had to do a lot of archiology in the code making strenthing my resolve to comment my code and create programm's as structured as possible.

    Informatiekunde 20012003

  • Hogeschool van Amsterdam

    Computer Science 19952001

I've bean part of the furniture for 6 years. I did every course on Computer Science there was. I was interested in the information, not so much into the accreditation.
I could always be found in the internet/Unix lab with the other hackers an internet pioneers.

    Activities and Societies:
    Corps Europe, LAKS
  • Universiteit van Amsterdam

    Psychology 19971999

Studying psychology was super interesting. Most of the theories and scientific recearch matched my own theories and experiance, working as a bouncer and propaganda in Spain.
I enoyed talking to the people in class. Having 600 people in a classroom with only 10% men, all looking stunning, and having an interesting conversation subject at hand,.. might have helped. ;)
