(Educational Institution; Higher Education industry)
June 1992 — May 1994 (2 years )
Principal Researcher: Professor Flossie Wong-Staal
CFAR (Center for AIDS Research),Dept of Medicine,UCSD,La Jolla,CA
Studied Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) gene regulation: Rev Response Element binding Nuclear Factor (NFrre) activity of lymphocytes during HIV infection, latency and reactivation was shown to be physiologically relevant to pathogenesis of AIDS. Explored the status of NFrre during activation of quiescent T cells, as well as, during monocyte to macrophage differentiation. Obtained correlative evidence regarding RRE-binding activity and susceptibility to HIV infection.
Led multiple projects and supervised technicians and students.
Initiated collaborations with other scientists and physicians.
Submitted patent for discovery of NFrre and potential use.
Participated in Grant writing for University wide AIDS Research Program.
Published papers in peer reviewed scientific journals.
Talk at Cold Spring Harbor (NY) meeting '92 on RNA Tumor Viruses.
See recommendation below.

September 1990 — May 1992 (1 year 9 months)
Principal Researcher: Professor Flossie Wong-Staal
CFAR (Center for AIDS Research)Dept.of Medicine,UCSD,La Jolla,CA
Conducted research on Post-transcriptional regulation of HIV gene expression.
Discovered a novel cellular factor, NFrre, which specifically binds to rev response element (RRE) of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) RNA.Studied potential role of the cellular factor in Rev mediated transactivation, HIV replication and latency.
Published papers in peer reviewed journals.
Presented findings in conferences.
See recommendation below.

November 1988 — August 1990 (1 year 10 months)
Principal Researcher: Professor Deborah Spector
Dept.of Biology, UCSD, La Jolla, CA
Conducted research on molecular interactions between Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) during dual infection. Molecular basis of interactions between the cis-acting regulatory regions of HIV genome and trans-acting factors specified by HCMV immediate early genes were studied by transient expression assays.
Published papers in scientific journals.
Presentation at West Coast Herpes Virus Research Workshop '89 &'90.
