Peter Maeseele’s Summary

Working as a freelancer & subcontractor, I try and manage to work on a diverse range of analysis & design assignments, mainly working on web projects, as a new media strategist, interaction designer & usability engineer.

Formally trained as an industrial designer, I’ve always approached the web from a usage-centered point-of-view, seeing technology mainly as a catalyst for improving business processes & social interactions.

I employ neither motto nor method. Throughout the years, I’ve adapted my personal goals to any formal methodology that came and went, be it waterfall, (R)UP, or Scrum, balancing between business and IT. A lot of my time is spent understanding the clients’ business goals, their customers’ needs & wants and technical constraints. When it comes to building software, I’m torn between (an ideal) belief in the software factory and the (more pragmatic) designer-as-artisan. It’s where the modernist and the artist meet. As a designer, I prefer a decisive minimalist approach. My ‘design thinking’ is influenced by people like Donald Norman, Jef Raskin and Edward Tufte.

Although I tend to work on the human side of HCI, my angle is systemic rather than humanist. Technology isn’t ‘user-friendly’ in se, and interaction design should focus on both man and machine. However, wherever possible technology should be build around people (i.e. be user-centered), since history has shown that the other way around doesn’t work (so far.) Machines are far more adaptable than people.

With over ten years of relevant internet experience, I’ve employed my skills in both a service & a product design context. In recent years, I’ve mainly worked on large enterprise business applications & community-building tools.

Peter Maeseele’s Interests:

Finding the perfect work/life balance can be tricky. I’m pretty passionate about what I do professionally, so a lot of my free time is spent reading about & toying with new internet-related technologies & web services. Any free time that’s left is divided between one too many hobbies: playing (bass-)guitar, learning Japanese (JPLT4), drawing, reading, Dungeons & Dragons & rock concerts. And last but certainly not least, I’m a family guy. I live in Hoboken, Belgium with my wife Bie and my two beautiful daughters, Luka & Janne.
