    • Involved with setting up assumptions for the system, solving data issues practically, running models and checking results.
    • Gained further experience in US GAAP, Net Premium and Embedded Value calculations and their South African implementation. Experience of Financial Soundness calculations and using the MoSes projection and valuation system.
    • Experience in system documentation.
    • I also developed tools and methods to improve system functionality and efficiency.

    I was recruited by Munich Re to develop an up to date valuation system for the life branch using Microsoft Access and the accompanying Visual Basic programming language. The previous system worked using hundreds of Excel spreadsheets and the task was to combine this into one program with a central database and central valuation assumptions. Key roles & experience:
    • Redoing all of the projection code into a simple, understandable set of code that could be used in a flexible manner. The system also manages the assumption information related to the different bases.
    • Work to enhance its capabilities to cover other business types and valuation methods including Embedded Value and US GAAP approaches.
    • I was also responsible for the Electronic Data Transfer system which translates policyholder data received from cedants to a Munich Re format.
    • Various business types and their workings and the basic workings of a reinsurance life office
    • Dealing with clients on technical issues.

    I was part of BUPA’s lifetime value team and I was also involved in various other projects of a statistical nature. My work here included:
    • Statistical analyses including a marketing analysis for BUPA’s hospitals. I produced statistical models for each hospital indicating areas with high likelihood of responding to direct marketing. These were used to direct a marketing campaign for several of the hospitals.
    • Production of claims models for use in the lifetime value project. This included getting the data from various sources, bringing the data together, exploration and fitting of models. This is typical of the work I did for BUPA.
