Dr. Louis R. Bucalo is a physician, medical scientist, and entrepreneur involved in programs for innovation in medicine, education and sports.
Dr. Bucalo received his B.A. in biochemistry from Harvard College magna cum laude in 1980, and his M.D. from Stanford University with Honors in Clinical Research in 1985. After working at Genentech, Dr. Bucalo founded Titan Pharmaceuticals, and was President and CEO for 15 years until his retirement in 2007. Under his leadership, the company established several novel programs, including its Iloperidone and Probuphine programs, and was chosen as one of Entrepreneur Magazine's top Hot 100 young companies in the U.S. for 2001.
Dr. Louis Bucalo established the company's iloperidone program for the treatment of schizophrenia and psychotic disorders. Iloperidone is tradenamed Fanapt, licensed to Vanda Pharmaceuticals and is approved in the U.S. for the treatment of these disorders
Dr. Bucalo also created the company’s Probuphine programs for treatment of drug addiction and other conditions. He is a lead inventor of Probuphine, and established the initial Phase 3 study demonstrating safety and effectiveness of Probuphine. Dr. Bucalo also directed Probuphine to the treatment of chronic pain. It is his hope and vision that Probuphine will help prevent the addiction that afflicts millions of people who receive prescription drugs to treat chronic pain.
Dr. Bucalo retired from the company as CEO in 2007 and Chairman in 2008 to pursue other activities, at which time he remained the largest individual shareholder of record of the company.
Dr. Bucalo is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Carnegie Mellon University and serves on the Research and Technology Committee. He has also served on university committees for music and the arts.
Louis R. Bucalo is also involved in innovative development of sporting activities. These programs are working to enhance the enjoyment and safety of these sports on a national level.
