I launched and managed the BBC's online community between 1997-2002, moving on to be responsible for the BBC's Internet safety initiatives from 2003-2007, including being a member of the Home Office Task Force on Internet Safety. My professional experience therefore includes the management of teams and services, a wide knowledge of editorial policy and strategy, radio production and presentation, and radio journalism. I am curently a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Westminster, School of Media, Art and Design and can therefore add research and lecturing to the portfolio of skills.

Assisting with the strategy and management of the Faculty which specialises in vocational education for the media and creative industries. The College is emphasising participatory and converged media in addition to its previous reputation for training the broadcast industry. I also research into participatory public service media and have most recently acted as an expert for the Council of Europe on public service media (September, 2009).

Working on creating a skeleton for a knowledge network on Ning and on a funding proposal to the EPSRC. The network, if funded, will be used to champion innovation for public service media by bringing together producers and academics in the UK. The shape of the network would first be explored through a six month feasibility study situated at the University of Westminster (November, 2009-April, 2010). My involvement would be as a mentor and advisor.

Undertaking a research project on virtual worlds funded by the BBC and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The BBC's pilot immersive/creative world for children (working title: Adventure Rock) is the case study. I am also assisting the BBC and the Arts and Humanities Research Council with the development of a knowledge exchange network.

Assisting the BBC Children's hosts to develop their role facilitating the CBBC online communities. I also contributed to the development of editorial policy and also strategy around user-generated content for both BBC Children's broadcasting and for the rest of the BBC. General knowledge building around the facilitation of online community, including feeding back the findings of my BBC-sponsored PhD research into the Corporation. In addition, I have continued to oversee the BBC's Internet safety awareness campaign.

Five year research project on the facilitation of participatory media, to be completed in December 2007. The research looks at existing and emerging presentation and production roles and how they assist audiences to engage with interactive content produced by the BBC. The findings show the relationship (responsibilities, control, production, requirements) between the BBC and its audience is changing.

Emint is the Association of Online Community Professionals. It provides advice and support for almost 500 community managers, social software builders, moderators, and those researching online social environments. Members are mainly based in the UK but also in Europe and the USA.
I organised meetings with speakers such as Howard Rhingold and Nancy White, and assisted the organisation to formalise. Three founder members were awarded 'Patron' status, myself, Phil Hall and Jen Liebhart; we continue to support the organisation.

Developed the BBC's Internet safety and awareness campaign, which includes a website (www.bbc.co.uk/chatguide), two television programmes, teaching packs for schools, a booklet for parents and partnerships/liaison with organisations such as the NSPCC and The Home Office. I also developed an outreach programme, in conjunction with BBC local radio and the BBC's mobile broadcast and outreach buses, to extend knowledge to parents and children. The teaching packs were delivered to every secondary school in the UK, and many primary schools; the booklet for parents was delivered to all UK libraries.

I launched, then grew, the BBC's Online Community (message boards, live chats, and chatrooms). Then led a team of producers and assistant producers. The role included the development of systems, editorial policy and guidelines. I also built up the first moderation team and trained the hosts and moderators, handing over the training to BBC Training. Finally, I hired and trained eight community managers for different BBC Departments for example, BBC Sport, Children's, Entertainment, Nations and Regions, Radio and so on.

As the BBC's Online Community grew, I built up a team of over fifteen Producers, Assistant Producers and freelancers. The team launched discussion spaces (message boards, and chatrooms) across the BBC. In addition we ran a live chat service, interviewing celebrities and expert guests on streamed video and in text; most chats were based in a studio in London, but some were on location, including the Edinburgh Festival and The Bill Chill Summer Festival.

I was one of the first producers employed by BBC Online and worked in the fledgling department from the launch. I produced websites for The Royal Society Christmas Lectures and The Philharmonic Orchestra. I was also the producer of WebGuide, the BBC's first database driven online service.

I ran a radio production company making documentary radio programmes for BBC Radio's 2 and 3. 80% of our programmes were 'Critics Choice of the Day' and we were nominated by the Controller of BBC Radio 2 as having made one of the best programmes from an Independent Radio Production Company, two years running. The programmes for BBC Radio 3 were for The Music Machine, a strand of programming for young musicians. These programmes looked at music composed for particular locations, a history of drumming, and a history of electronic music which featured the first electronic sounds. The two-hour documentaries for Radio 2 included a history of the fairground, National Service, Dating in the 1950s and 'Glowan' a summer solstice festival in Penzance in Cornwall.

I am completing a doctorate which examines the role of the broadcast presenter/producer within online communities, user interfaces, video loops on interactive television and media players.
