Senior Designer at Metro Pulse
Knoxville, Tennessee Area
I was a page designer at The Roanoke Times for several years, with experience laying out news, sports and features broadsheet pages, and entertainment tab pages.
Focus on sharing information by way of very visual, easily consumable design.
Emphasis on applying new techniques and styles for presentation.
Now I'm carrying those skills into my position as Senior Design with Metro Pulse in Knoxville, TN.

February 2008 — Present (1 year 6 months)
There is the "job description" part of my job: I prepare ads and design feature spreads for this weekly alternative publication in Knoxville, TN.
And there is the other part: I've had the chance at this job to explore workflow efficiency and come up with strategies to streamline processes (as an example, I have helped my co-workers in editorial learn InCopy so we take advantage of its integration with InDesign).
Metro Pulse (newly bought by The E.W. Scripps Company) has also just switched to a new CMS for its Web site, as well as completely overhauled its design; without an established Web editor on staff, I strive to fill that role.
I revel in the fluid nature of the job, as well as the chance to continue my work in print design, which stole my heart several years ago when I was on staff at The Roanoke Times in Virginia.

I was one of two coordinators for the newspaper's teen-generated weekly page, The Edge. I provided guidance to a team of thirty high school volunteers, including four student editors. During my time in the position, I helped the team restructure its deadline and workflow process in an effort to build in more review of the students' work. I also designed the page each week.

Though I haven't put my creative writing degree to practical use, I often think that learning the effect of line breaks in poetry informed my headline writing; and that the emphasis on critique for that degree has kept me open to constructive criticism in any job that I have since done.
