CEO Barilla Japan
Privately Held; 5001-10,000 employees; Food Production industry
2002 – 2004 (2 years)
I was brought into Barilla Japan - the leading food service import brand of pasta in Japan - with the primary objective of either taking them to a new distributor or taking the company independent. Following a thorough evaluation of the situation, I recommended that instead we create a spirit of partnership and cooperation with the distributor. After six years of threatened “divorce,” this was a significant challenge. However, the positive results from this change proved worthwhile. In a time of continued contraction in Japanese consumer spending, we increased sales by over 15% for two consecutive years.

1999 – 2001 (2 years)
President of both Club Med KK, our commercial company for sales and marketing in Japan (100 employees), as well as Club Med SCM, the company that operates two vacation villages located in Japan for a total of 450 employees. Annual sales were approximately $100 million.
I engineered a successful sales turn-around supported by innovative package campaigns and organizational restructuring. I replaced the marketing department with capable professionals, identified and supported under-utilized employees for promotion and counseled out employees that were damaging morale. The new organization was left with a high sense of purpose and responsibility, working cohesively together. They have become effective problem solvers and planners with an understanding of how their decisions affect profitability.
