Born in Brasilia, Brazil's capital, in 1964 Lili Vieira de Carvalho moved four years later to Petrópolis, a city in the hills, one hour from Rio de Janeiro.
In 1986, she began working for one of the most prominent Brazilian painters, Luiz Aquila (www.luizaquila.com.br). A few years later she started to represent other artists besides him. Working as an art agent and producer, Lili organized numerous exhibitions, and assisted Aquila when he took the position of Director at the School of Visual Arts in Rio (1988-1991). Primarily, Lili acted as art consultant, dealing with galleries, private and corporate clients.
From 2001 to 2003, Lili was made director of a cultural center in Petrópolis, established at her old family house, an historic 19th-century building where she organized several art shows and cultural events. From 2002 to 2005 she was a partner in a cultural production company that promoted touring art exhibitions throughout Rio de Janeiro state.
Lili recently relocated to Vancouver. From June 2007 to June 2008, she collaborated as Art Researcher for Adbusters magazine (adbusters.org), finding images to illustrate editorial content, along with researching material on South America politics and current affairs.
Since June 2008, she has been working as Art Consultant at Diane Farris Gallery (www.dianefarrisgallery.com). Founded in 1984, the Gallery is an internationally recognized showcase for contemporary Canadian and international art and is especially noted for finding and establishing new and young talent.
With a BA in English from Universidade Catolica, Lili is fluent in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, and is competent in French. Lili has skills in web design and image manipulation, and has recently joined the Vancouver Latin American Film Festival (vlaff.org) board as programmer. She has spent extensive time abroad, especially in London and New York, but keeps a close eye on developments in Brazilian culture and politics.
