Leigh Anderson's Summary

Expertise in high-tech product management, product marketing, and business development, with a focus on digital imaging, and massively-parallel computing markets, tools and applications software since 2003.

Created a highly profitable $440M/first-5 years software product line from scratch, including leading one of the more successful acquisitions in industry history, while co-authoring a fundamental software performance patent.

Very early employee of two innovative semiconductor startups: in 3D graphics/video chips and massively-parallel processors. Both were acquired, one with a $nine-figures exit.

Proven ability to match a market need with technology opportunity to create sustainable competitive advantage. Led and executed high-impact product definition and marketing campaigns to introduce both entire companies, and new products in new categories.

Negotiated with Apple and Avid to obtain rights and offer the only commercially available embedded libraries for ProRes and DNxHD video codecs. Also obtained rights to AVC-Intra from Panasonic and trade secret API access at Adobe.

Experienced in software, hardware or systems companies, with a depth of experience in software primarily - in pro video, imaging, standards-conversion, video codecs, camera technology, massively-parallel computing, developer tools, big data, host or embedded systems and software.

Specialties: Technology product management, product marketing, business development, acquisitions, video and imaging software, video codecs, image-processing, signal-processing, medical-imaging, bioinformatics, massively-parallel computing tools, software, hardware, embedded and host-acceleration systems, and database systems.

2014: Phase 1 completed - vertical market segmentation and web content for a Fortune 500 company. Directed and created the content for a software developer portal website, for their ‘Big Data’ enabling technology.

2013 project example - For a video software company. The work included selection of codec standards, sourcing 3rd party software libraries, and doing initial negotiations with software library providers, using my video software and camera company contacts in USA, Japan and Europe.

2013 project example - For an engineering software company. Target market sizing and segmentation, CRM system improvements, lead creation, sales & marketing advice.

Director Business Development

TechRev LLC

Privately Held; 1-10 employees; International Trade and Development industry

March 2012April 2013 (1 year 2 months) Portland, Oregon Area

Worldwide marketing, sales, product mgt and business development. Primary focus on pro video and other software opportunities for heterogeneous multi-core and many-core platforms for high performance computing applications. Primary client - a world-class engineering services firm with elite GPGPU programming expertise in USA and China. My focus was on OpenCL pro video libraries for: H.264 GPU acceleration, TV-standards-conversion, video pre-processing filters and image-processing kernels.

Privately Held; 51-200 employees; Electrical/Electronic Manufacturing industry

20092012 (3 years) Portland, Oregon Area

Business development and sales primarily for Nethra's core products which are video camera SoC devices and software. The technologies include advanced video/image processing and multi-stream H.264 encoding. Primarily used with Aptina and OmniVision sensors, many Nethra projects involved the entire camera electronics chain aft of the sensor. Sound Devices' PIX camera-attached video recorders were a notable adopter of the codec libraries.

Also product-managed and sold the Ambric-architecture, massively-parallel processor that Nethra acquired in 2009. I re-positioned the embedded processor chip as a more turn-key solution for professional video devices with production-proven pro video codec software such as Apple ProRes 422, Avid DNxHD, AVC-Intra and other video formats.

Product Line Manager - Video

Ambric, Inc. (Purchased by Nethra Imaging)

Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Semiconductors industry

20032008 (5 years) Portland, Oregon Area

Founding marketing/biz-dev employee for this innovative massively-parallel processor semiconductor company. Co-wrote original biz plan for $1M seed funding. Did much of the early customer and pro video market development to help win the $10M Series-A. Negotiated a special Adobe partner access to the proprietary Adobe API for accelerating their video compression tools, using a PCI Express acceleration approach.

Initially, worked on business plan, parallel-programming tools product management, company-launch marketing, early sales, and biz dev primarily in the video infrastructure space. Pro video and imaging products included H.264 and other video codecs, scalers, de-interlacers, etc. Experienced with video for embedded systems or host systems in a variety of segments such as broadcast, streaming, post-production effects, and surveillance. Also worked on medical imaging market development, primarily ultrasound and 3D fluoroscopic X-Ray. Also worked on detailed market and massively-parallel algorithm-fit for bioinformatics, and network security (mainly 10Gbps intrusion detection). (Ambric was acquired by Nethra Imaging.)

Business Development, Product/Line Management

Mentor Graphics

Public Company; 1001-5000 employees; MENT; Computer Software industry

19942003 (9 years) Portland, Oregon Area

As one of the earliest Calibre marketing staff, led a 2-year campaign to establish Mentor’s verification software as the ‘gold standard’ tool in key Asian foundries, directly enabling hundreds of millions in software revenue from fabless semi customers. Then founded a new, adjacent product line through a software company acquisition I led, plus co-authoring a fundamental performance patent. The new system resulted in a huge speed-up in performance on 64-processor systems reducing run-times from weeks to hours. Calibre is still a principal profit and revenue driver of the company, and one of the most successful product franchises in industry history.
Before joining Calibre group, gained two years M&A experience in Mentor's biz dev group, with total deals flow of about 45 – including licensing, acquisitions of technologies and software companies in the U.S. and Europe.

Leigh Anderson's Patents

  • Integrated Verification and Manufacturability Tool

    • United States Patent 7017141
    • Issued March 21, 2006
Inventors: Leigh Anderson, Leigh C. Anderson, Nicolas B. Cobb, Laurence W. Grodd, Emile Sahouria, Siqiong You

This breakthrough was a software performance patent that reduced optical proximity correction (OPC) for advanced semiconductor masks by an order of magnitude. The key insight was realizing that an IC database software engine invented for another purpose could be adapted to reduce OPC runtimes dramatically.
