Leif Remø's Overview
- Sr. QA Data Analyst at Electronic Arts
Leif Remø's Summary
I was a physics research assistant for neutrino and cosmic ray research groups at LSU, writing software to acquire and analyze data. I then went into web development, creating secure database-driven websites handling data like billable hours, jobs, equipment, and employee benefits. As the development manager, I created scopes of work, created work estimates, wrote proposals, held client meetings, and assigned tasks to a team of developers. Out of the office, I've worked on personal web projects, gathering data scattered across the internet and books, organizing it in a database, and creating interactive visualizations such as maps, graphs, and timelines. In the office, I now work on documenting data sources, defining data-extraction methods, writing ETL scripts, and creating visualizations for the QA side of one of the world's leading video game companies.

Leif Remø's Projects
- May 2011 to May 2011
Maps of the old Baton Rouge streetcar system weren't on the web, and I decided to get them there. Using descriptions from a book written in 1962, I've drawn up the streetcar lines for various periods in an interactive Google Map. A screenshot of my page was used at the 2011 Louisiana Smart Growth Summit.
- May 2011 to July 2011
With the Mississippi River levels rising and threatening flooding all along its path in 2011, I realized I could put together an animation of live river gauge data showing where the water surge is. I later included the gauges on the Atchafalaya River.
- July 2011 to August 2011
As I starting becoming involved with the Foundation for Historical Louisiana, I began wondering where all the historic places are in Baton Rouge. The best I could find were textual lists with inaccurate coordinates. I decided to put together a web app that could be used on a smart phone, showing your current position and the direction and distance to the parish's historic places as you walk or drive around. I determined the true coordinates by studying satellite images in Google Maps.
- February 2012 to April 2012
Like the Historic Places web app, this web app shows your current location amongst a map of markers. What's new is that an admin (me) can log-in and add and edit markers directly on the map itself, dragging markers to the actual location of bicycle racks.
- January 2012 to May 2012
As an election to better fund the Baton Rouge transit system was approaching (on April 21), I was confused about how the bus system got to be so bad. I spent hours Googling for snippets of information so I could piece together a timeline. My timeline is now the de facto authority of this city's transit history.
- March 2012 to July 2013
Bike Baton Rouge wanted a web map showing all of their suggested bike routes, routes selected to promote safe bicycling in town. I used Google Maps as the interactive GIS until running into API constraints with the number of routes they would allow to be displayed at one time.
- April 2012 to April 2012
The Louisiana Secretary of State has results from the CATS bus system property tax elections in 2010 and 2012, and I wanted to play with the data to see what I could find out. Currently, you can view and compare 2010 and 2012 election data for vote ("Yes" vs. "No"), voter counts, and turnout, all on an interactive Google Map.
- August 2000 to April 2002
I wrote all the code for controlling the external hardware used for cosmic ray air shower detection within a Windows GUI DAQ software package called KmaxNT. I calibrated the scintillators, phototubes, and CAMAC and NIM modules and fine-tuned my code to work with that specific hardware.
- October 2004 to June 2011
I developed and maintained custom, database-driven websites using PHP and MySQL. Click the project title to read more.
