Lee Packham’s Summary

A career of 10 years in the I.T. industry spans the gaming and medical sectors. Starting out developing systems for cancer treatment machines, I learned the skills to architect large and complex systems that are built to last and be secure to the highest standards. These skills were applied to the successful Prizefight and X-ray Gaming Platforms as well as optimising sites like Enemy Down to manage larger user bases than they were designed for. While at TNWA I developed leadership skills to manage projects and teams of developers to produce the systems I architect.

  • Self Employed

    (Self-Employed; Computer Software industry)

Took time to study the iPhone SDK (Objective-C) and release my own iPhone application called “Tube Notify” (http://bit.ly/19uBwi) which uses new iPhone OS 3.0 features to push tube status updates to the phone. Uses 1/10th of the memory footprint of it’s nearest competitor – important on an embedded device.

The server side component to this was written in Django 1.1 and I released an Open Source Django application for pushing status updates to the phone (http://leepa.github.com/django-iphone-push/).

Also did some small contracts for former employees as well as Alpha International. Mainly doing Linux system administration/problem solving.

  • Chief Technical Officer (CTO)

  • Technical Operations Manager

    TNWA Limited

    (Computer Games industry)

    October 2005June 2009 (3 years 9 months)

As the first technical employee in the business I was responsible for the initial architecture of an online gaming system (Prizefight, defunct) that dynamically pitched players against each other so that they could play for money. This included not only the automation of the site and game servers, but also handling of double entry accounting and integration of Paypal and Natwest Streamline services for payment and prize payout. During the development of Prizefight, I built a small development team of four. They all reported to myself.

After Prizefight was shut down due to legal threats, handled the taking over of Enemy Down (http://www.enemydown.co.uk/) into the company and led the small team of developers into refactoring it into a newer offering (never saw the light of day).

Designed and architected, based on Enemy Down’s own anti-cheat, a new anti-cheat brand (http://www.xraygaming.com/). Originally using a client written by external contractors was bought in house and rewritten, by myself in C++ using wxWidgets/STL/Boost/libcURL and retrofitted to the existing server side. This meant that no users were impacted.

Migrated co-located services into the ‘Cloud’ during 2008/9 as the original servers bought in 2005/6 started to fail. This produced significant cost savings for the business. I also dealt with all security aspects of the server side offering. This is especially important in the Gaming sector as these sites were subject to a large number of Denial of Service attacks.

  • Software Engineer

    Elekta

(Public Company; EKTAb; Medical Devices industry)

    January 2001June 2005 (4 years 6 months)

At Elekta, I started out as a Visual Basic developer, working on bug tickets and the like. Quickly moving into a more Database orientated role, my first major project was to replace the SQL Server 6.5 replication engine with something that was more appropriate for medical data.
After completion of that, worked on a project that was for cost reduction of the hardware system that was used for the device. This involved learning Visual C++ and moving into a more low-level role, developing hardware-abstraction layers so that the GUI developers could interface with new components. I also developed a recovery DVD solution that meant the end user had a better experience when there were problems with the system.

My knowledge of SQL Server and Windows lead to me supporting the departments IT needs on top of my development and architectural responsibilities.

Towards the end of my time at Elekta, my knowledge of C++ had grown to such a level that I lead a group that replaced the coding standards with something more modern to aide development, but still comply with Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) guidelines.

  • Programmer

    CQ Systems

    (Financial Services industry)

    1999December 2000 (1 year )

Started in R&D developing a Web Based front end for and existing Oracle Database using ASP/COM. After R&D, moved into more mainstream development and support for existing clients. This involved developing solutions to bugs as well as the development of a Settlement Quotations system.
