Lee Greif’s Summary

Lee Greif is a dedicated public servant who has been involved in politics, been the CEO of a major chain of clothing stores, and has purchased and managed numerous businesses successfully. Even though he has dedicated so much time to these ventures, he has also volunteered his time and money to numerous charities and not-for-profit organizations.

Perhaps one of the largest institutions that he volunteered for is the Menorah Medical Center. For this organization he has volunteered his time for a total of 17 years, and has served as Chairman of the Board of directors for two years. The committees on which he served included the Patient Quality Care Committee and the Medical Staff Appointments committee. In 1992 the hospital was suffering from severe financial problems. Greif was elected as Chairman of the Board during this time period. He devised a plan by which he would sell the hospital. It was eventually sold and he used the $53 million they received from the sale to start the Jewish Heritage Foundation. Greif served as the original Chairman of the Board for the organization and has continued to serve as a board member ever since.

The Menorah Hospital chain had to face a lot of competition as it was in a nearby proximity to St. Luke’s Hospital, Baptist Medical Center, Trinity Lutheran Hospital, and Truman Medical Center. As a result of this, the hospital had a difficult time making money and was in fact losing it. From 1989 to 1992 it had lost nearly $10 million.Lee Greif was elected as Chairman of the Board in 1992 and received an offer from Columbia Hospital systems to sell the hospital. He was quoted at the time as saying: "While we did not seek this offer from Columbia, we are certainly flattered by it.” It was important to Greif that the hospital maintains its long standing Jewish tradition.

Lee Greif’s Specialties:

When it came time to sell there were two bidders who were engaged in a fierce bidding war, Columbia and Midwest. Eventually, Midwest would win and end up purchasing the hospital for $52 million. They would, eventually build a 200 bed hospital in Overland Park in what is now the Menorah Park campus. The construction of the new hospital in Overland park sparked controversy as Kansas City already had a surplus of beds and didn’t really need the new 200 bed facility.
