Lauren teaches Design Studies to undergraduate Product and Media designers. The current project brief she created focuses on critical thinking and writing.
The aim of Lauren's teaching is to develop design mindfulness, specifically an understanding of the effects of cultural trends upon design. The objectives for the students are to explore contemporary design issues through engagement in a series of workshop discussions (i.e. Service Design & Ethnography), making connections to real world scenarios and secondly, to observe the world around us and critically analyse situations / objects from a design perspective.

The real work experience aims to open design graduates' eyes to the opportunities of using their skills beyond the usual design roles and the possibility of working in the public sector. Concurrently, the programme aims to educate public sector bodies on the skills and value designers can bring to their organisations.

Transferring today to tomorrow
I am part of a multi-disciplinary team undertaking a 3 month project with Deutch Telekom laboratories; T-labs, in Berlin focusing on information communication for older users. The project was initiated by the renowned design researcher Dr Rosan Chow of T-labs. The students I am working alongside have backgrounds in interaction design, multi-touch technology and jewellery. Project mentoring, research and facilitation are being provided by Mike Press, Professor of Design Policy and Head of School, Hazel White, Director of the Masters of Design program and Fraser Bruce, a specialist in team dynamics and product development. The outcome will be visualisations of new information and communication products and services for older users.
