I joined HaVa in 2004 when the outgoing IT director left and created a vacancy for someone who had experience in the area of virtual hosting. The company has grown slowly but stedily over the years and is now focusing more on co-location rather than virual hosting. I mainly use HaVa as a testing ground for new technologies and ideas I want to bring to my day to day work.

My role at Rated People saw me head back to my roots in small business. It gave me the opportunity to architect core systems in a fresh environment. While with the business I implemented:

- Centralised authentication for Windows clients and Unix servers using LDAP.
- A high availability infrastructure for the company's production environment using Linux HA and MySQL replication.
- A reporting and business intelligence system using open source products using an OLAP database.
- A Windows domain using samba and LDAP.

Day to day I was involved with troubleshooting live systems, managing development environments and dealing with vendors.

Joining Betfair gave me the opportunity to work on some larger systems in a more complex environment than the one that I had been managing at Internet Tasmania. During my time at Betfair I was involved with the a variety of projects including:

- Building out and maintaining the Australian exchanges Linux infrastructure including front-end sun web servers.
- Researching and implementing proactive monitoring solutions using open source technologies
- Performing migration of critical support infrastructure including high volume mail servers, DNS server and some lower volume internal applications

I worked at Internet Tasmania part time from its date of inception in late 1999 whilst also studying part time for my Bachelor of Computing. Although starting as helpdesk staff I quickly moved in to the role of Technical manager where I;

- Designed and integrated RADIUS authentication systems.
- Designed and implemented DNS, mail and hosting solutions.
- Designed and authored company website.
- Implemented account management system including online credit card processing systems.
- Managed vendor relations.

Working at an ISP was a good introduction to building high availability systems while keeping costs low.
