I began programming when I was very young and was good enough to get paid for it.
Software Developer 1984-1989
I got bored sitting in front of a computer 8 hours a day and wanted to talk to people more
Retail Business Manager 1989-1993
I saw the internet starting to hit and it looked like a nice combination of interacting with people and technology. It was.
1993-1995 Internet Direct - Corporate Sales Manager
1995-2000 USWeb -> USWeb/CKS -> marchFirst - Senior Business Analyst (covers most of the titles I had during this run)
2000-2005 Self Employed helping SOHO/SMB sector make effective use of collaboration focused technology. Started out as Cummings Consulting, then Turned into Shadowbox Studios.
Then we decided to have a child. This takes a lot more money long term than I could convincingly forecast on my own. I was getting bored with the kinds of little projects you work on when your not "staff" in any way.
2005-2007 Two jobs (Interface Guru and The Foundation for Blind Children) and continued several self employment projects.
2007 - Present Global Alerts, "project" "manager". So far it looks on track to becoming the best job I've ever had. I'll have to update when the dust settles and we're really moving as fast as it seems we will be.

At Shadowbox Studios we failed to reinvent outsourcing. We did do some very cool development projects though. We're still working through some ideas for down the road, and I really like the brand we started to create, so I'm never going to end this company. We're just quiet right now while we work on more important projects.

I was the first full time consultant hired for the Phoenix office of USWeb. It was a great ride that put me in front of pretty much every company we engaged with on the Dot Com roller-coaster ride. I was there from the small office of pioneers through to the corporate success of being a large public company. My efforts focused on teaching a very wide variety of software development and design staff how to balance agility and discipline in a totally new form of technical innovation. While it is discouraging that the company fell victim to the market correction that eliminated the business model of many consultancies that specialized in internet based software development, the education I got there really can't be taught in schools.
