Leala Abbott’s Summary

I am an information science professional with over 8+ years of experience in archives, specializing in information management, digital repositories, DAM systems and collaborative software. I entered the library science field from a background in design and technology. I hold an AA in Multimedia Programming and Design and a BA in Museum studies and my Masters in Information and Library Science from Rutgers University.

As a digital archivist, I process, assess and manage digital files (i.e. images and photographs) and paper records using digital asset and collection management systems. I am a Metadata specialist for digital arts and photography, working with taxonomies, controlled vocabularies and current metadata schemas (i.e. Dublin Core). My work includes traditional archives activities such as finding aids, collection processing, assessment, accessions, storage and handling.

As an information manager, I'm passionate about creating working environments that apply current technologies to business operations and practices. I employ a strong emphasis on creating systems with a focus on user-centered design and information structures that make sense to the end-user. I have often been referred to as the “nit-picarian” (a play on librarian and nit-picky) as I am religious about following accepted standards and practices for handing digital information, but I also believe it’s important to be fresh and innovative.
