Kristy Nilsson performed & trained with Atlanta Ballet, Charleston Ballet Theatre & Houston Repertory Ballet, & trained under principal dancers from ABT, Kirov Ballet of Russia, National Ballet of Canada & Martha Graham, & with Boston Ballet & Joffrey. She was a Dance Pedagogy (instruction) Honors student at University of Oklahoma, graduating Cum Laude from Houston's High School for the Performing & Visual Arts.
Ms. Nilsson has choreographed 30 pieces performed by 11 companies in 7 states. She was introduced as "a very talented young choreographer" by Atlanta Ballet Director John McFall; Diane Sales said: "An incredible talent to choreograph". Company directors have compared her work to Ashton, Tharp & MacMillan.
In 2007, Jonathan Phelps selected Kristy Nilsson's new work, Apolysis, for performance at the Regional Dance Association's 50th Anniversary National Festival, saying the "opening image is startlingly beautiful... for this mysterious somber ballet. Ms. Nilsson had such a wonderful way of keeping us intrigued throughout the entire ballet. She has breathtaking movement quality..."
In 2007 and 2006, Kristy choreographed two works, Angustia & Jagganat, for The Georgia Ballet, a professional company. In 2006, Amasea was commissioned & performed for SERBA. Ms. Nilsson was honored to set a new, original full-length Nutcracker in 2004, reprised in 2005. In 2004, Georgia Youth Ballet performed her Sublimation at SERBA, & her works Sententia & Summertime were performed in concert with the Joffrey Ballet Ensemble. In 2003, Ms. Nilsson received Regional Dance America's 2nd highest choreographic recognition for La Deseada.
Ms. Nilsson is a dance instructor and choreographer based in Atlanta - she enjoys teaching ballet, pointe, modern & jazz from pre-professional through creative movement, & teaches Master Classes in ballet & modern dance, & workshops in choreography. Ms. Nilsson has coached both dancers & gymnasts to top state & national performance awards.
