John Kivus’s Summary

I’m an energetic programmer, looking for new challenges to conquer and difficult problems to solve. I want a work environment that lets me do both of those things as often as possible. I want to be involved with all phases of a software application's construction, from specification to design to implementation.

My technical writing teachers would probably have an ulcer if they knew I started off a blurb that way, or that I used “I” in my resume. I am not someone, however, who feels comfortable filling out templates to get my point across and I very rarely omit the subject of a sentence when I’m talking in the first person.

John Kivus’s Specialties:

In my time in the industry I’ve worked on all tiers of an n-tier architecture. I started off my career as a Web Designer, moved on to a User Interface programmer, evolved into a User Interface designer (including conducting usability testing on my interface designs), shifted into a business tier programmer and finally settled in as a component architect.

I started off my time at DST as a User Interface developer. I worked primarily developing administration screens for the company’s core customer management and billing product. I then moved on to designing those screens, writing specifications for them and leading a team of developers to fully implements my designs.

After successfully delivering my administration interface, I moved onto the team responsible for developing the overall architecture of the next release of our product. When the high level architecture had been established, I began working on a complete redesign of the company’s transactions calculation and taxation engine, with the ultimate goal to create pluggable interfaces to a wide variety of tax applications.

When not working on my primary assignments, I was involved with a number of processes improvements, such as: creating unit testing frameworks and automating developer environment setup.

  • Senior Web Developer

    IQ Interactive

    (Partnership; 11-50 employees; Internet industry)

    January 2000May 2003 (3 years 5 months)

As the lead developer in the organization, I was responsible for the design and implementation of a number of complete web applications. The most robust were: (1) an application used for the submission of medical claims, (2) an application that processes the results of a large number of surveys into a statistical data warehouse and (3) an application that could be used to generate websites for educational organizations.

In addition to my development duties, I was the server administrator for the application server, web server, and email server. This involved both maintaining the servers that were in place, and configuring new servers as they became necessary.
