The broad theme is the empowerment of individuals through giving them control over their online electronic information. The applications that can use an electronic identity are many and varied. The first application is identification where an individual proves who they are through accessing electronic information about themselves and proving who they are. Another is providing people ways to securely store information about themselves on devices that they physically control - like voice prints on mobile phones - and providing the facility for a person to prove who they are with a phone.
