After completing recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot Parris Island in 1990, I attended Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger, followed by Combat Engineer School at Courthouse Bay, Camp Lejeune.
Upon graduation, I was assigned to the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion (2nd CEB) where I served as an M-60 gunner. During this tour I deployed to the Persian Gulf for the duration of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In 1992 I received TAD orders to participate in the Competition in Arms Program (CIAP) as a member of 2nd CEB's competitive marksmanship team. After qualifying in the top third of both the Intramural and Division competition, I advanced to the FMF-Atlantic competition where I placed 11th overall in the pistol competition, and earned the secondary MOS of 8530 (Marksmanship Coach) after completing the Marine Corps Combat Marksmanship Coaches' Course.
In 1993, I was promoted to Corporal and assigned the billet of Company Training NCO. After completing the L.I.N.E. Instructor Course, I was assigned the additional billet of Battalion Close Combat Instructor. In 1994, I received orders to the 2nd FSSG Group Comptroller's Office where I served as the Assistant to the Comptroller Chief. I was promoted to Sergeant in 1995, shortly before being honorably discharged.
