Having graduated and now getting out into the working world, I am trying to find ways to both apply and expand on my academic knowledge. Project management has been one of my biggest areas of interest and so is at the center of my current job search. What appeals to me most are the changing nature of the field (no two projects or teams are the same), and the room for personal style to be applied. Feeling that I have the tools to perform well at first, and grow quickly, it is an area I would love to experience.
This past year, in the Oregon State University MBA program, my project management skills were put to the test. Working as part of a team of MBA students we created a five-year business plan commercializing a nano-film deposition technology used in anti-reflective coatings for eyeglasses. This challenge showed me how the various aspects of business connect, how even a butterfly can cause a hurricane. My project management skills greatly improved from managing four teammates, 15 chapters, and dozens of drafts.
We received several awards in competitions judged by panels of venture capitalists, including “Most viable” of nine MBA teams. The AR lens market was estimated at $2.3 billion in 2007 and growing. By placing coating machines at the retail level, our technology could drastically change the industry by removing third-party labs and redundant inventories.

Working as a barista at the busiest café on campus our revenue as a stand-alone location was almost half as much as the full service dining centers, and climbing every year. Working at night when staff management was not present, and often being the most senior employee, placed a great deal of responsibility on me. Being located in a dormitory, I had authority to work with fire and police personnel in the event of emergencies or security concerns. Always striving to exceed expectations, I received multiple PRIDE awards for excellent customer service. Interpersonal skills were very important to maintaining a trusting relationship with coworkers, management, and dorm residents. I was trusted to:
- Train new employees
- Correctly handle cash, and prepare food
- Make on the spot decisions to resolve problems
- Ensure safety and security of coworkers and customers
