(Public Relations and Communications industry)
January 2009 — Present (11 months)
Consulting with businesses and executing cost-effective online marketing--emphasizing "new" and social media and web videos--to raise awareness, build the brand, develop new customers and retain current customers.

July 2008 — Present (1 year 5 months)
I launched a membership website devoted to teaching the internal Chinese martial arts (kung-fu) of Chen Tai Chi, Hsing-I Chuan, and Baguazhang. I've studied martial arts since 1973 and I've been teaching for 11 years. I also have won over a hundred tournament competitions, including two national titles. I create the video lessons, edit them and put them on the site. Marketing the site is a lot of fun--very creative. Members pay $20 a month to access the site--in the U.S., Japan, the Netherlands, England, Belgium, and other countries. My goal is at least 500 members within 2 years. I also produce kung-fu instructional DVDs and they sell to martial artists around the world. I have 13 DVDs on the market with a goal of 30 in the near future.

June 2007 — June 2008 (1 year 1 month)
I served as the primary spokesperson for USF but was recently one of more than 400 jobs eliminated by massive state budget cuts. It was a great position and I was thrust in front of the news media on a lot of sensitive educational issues and crisis events. Some of the Tampa reporters were only interested in tearing the University down. It was an exciting, stressful, and fun learning experience. I brought a new vision of media relations to USF, and I'm disappointed that I didn't have time to fully implement it and get my staff up to speed.
While I was there, however, I created a blog, recorded podcasts with professors to put on the web, shot and created videos for the University's website, and tried to push media relations beyond just news releases. After being laid off at USF, I decided to use all these skills for myself, and I worked hard and launched www.InternalFightingArts.com on July 4th, 2008.

March 1999 — May 2007 (8 years 3 months)
Directed the media relations efforts, helping ACT grow from 120 million media impressions per year in 1999 to ONE BILLION in 2007. This was done through creative media strategies and tactics that helped build the brand and encourage positive national publicity. Developed great relationships with national education reporters and editors. Created a nationally self-syndicated newspaper column. Created VNRs that aired in major markets such as Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Phoenix and others. Pushed the organization to embrace web video and podcasts. Created electronic newsletters and other marketing communications. See more at my blog (www.kengullette.com).

1997 — 1999 (2 years )
Handled PR and media relations for a variety of clients, including a startup airline (AccessAir), a casino, retail department store chain, defense equipment manufacturer and others. This is where I learned that I really enjoy PR and media relations.

I loved working at Channel 18 despite the low pay. At one point, I was the assignment editor, reporter, videographer, producer, and anchor of the weekend 11:00 news. I shot it, wrote it, produced and edited it, and then anchored the newscast. Complete total freedom and creative control. I didn't realize at the time that I could have done that my entire life and been happy. Sometimes the desire of getting to a larger market isn't the best decision.
1971 — 1975
I served in several capacities for the Progress -- reporter, photographer, managing editor for layout, and humor columnist. My satire column, "Surely You Jest!" poked gentle fun at the administration and at students. One column had President Martin eating a football at one of the Generals' games. Another column featured a student's bed sheets getting up and terrorizing the town because he hadn't washed them all semester. A few years after I graduated, I accidentally ran a red light in Lexington and a police officer stopped me. After I gave him my driver's license he asked if I went to Eastern. I said yes. He said, "You gave me a lot of laughs with your column. I'm letting you go with a warning." :)
