Kelsey L. Hayes' Summary

Since August 2012, I have been a copy editor for POLITICO Pro, the subscription service of POLITICO that specializes in policy news. I was promoted to senior copy editor in December 2013.

I have been with Pro since it had four verticals (transportation, energy, health care and technology) and helped launch nine new verticals since (education, trade, defense, tax, finance, campaigns, agriculture, cybersecurity and ehealth). I am by this point extremely proficient in subscription- and Web-based workflows, including managing content for email, online and print publication. I have adapted to numerous new and updated Pro products, including newsletters, headline digests, events, calendar round-ups and more. I was also charged with updating and maintaining the Pro stylebook, which includes a general section and vertical-specific entries.

As a Pro copy editor, I have also become extraordinarily familiar with a wide range of American and international policy topics in a variety of areas. Not being limited to any one vertical allows me to become proficient with almost all of them: pertinent committees, lawmakers, industry groups and advocacy organizations.

I also maintain my own blog and portfolio site, where I regularly discuss journalism, social media, travel and culture.

My political specialties are Western Europe and the European Union, human rights, and American politics and foreign policy. Examples of my academic writing may be found on my personal portfolio site.

My dissertation examined the influence of far-right parties in EU member states, and how their increased popularity corresponds to expanding EU powers. My dissertation may be read on my portfolio site.

Specialties: Copy editing, European politics, policy and regulatory reporting and editing, trade policy, page design, editorial writing, multimedia, academic editing, non-native English editing, American politics, economics, social media, human rights, foreign policy, electoral issues.
