I've worked the last decade in a community radio setting as a news reporter and occasion public affairs programmer. I make most of my money as a broadcast tech, running the board for a news program. But I think of myself as a journalist first. I would like to host a public affairs program, particularly one about how science and technology affects our lives, communities and civil liberties, and more generally, about problems that affect humanity as a whole and solutions that are not tied to identity politics. The catch is that I want to make money doing it. I have done such programs as a volunteer at my station, and on the Internet where some people bought the CD's of the show but others downloaded for free and gave the programs away. They thought they were not doing anything wrong because they were giving the programs away and not making money off them. I don't want to be a copyright cop. But I want to make a predictable and good living from my work. I need to reach an audience that is able and willing to pay for the programming, so that I can devote full-time on doing the best possible programs and not be looking for survival jobs.
In late October, 2008, I started the blog Kellia's World - "No Pitch" Journalism (http://kelliasworld.wordpress.com) You are invited to visit it.
