Keesha Mayes’s Summary

My proudest career achievement is the creation and implementation of a successful community women’s health and empowerment group called the Healthy Divas. The Healthy Divas is a community-based participatory research partnership that combines a peer support group format with creative arts and self-esteem building exercises as a means of encouraging African-American and Latina women to make healthy life-style choices.

I developed this program with the intention to inspire, educate and support women in my community, who are often overlooked and/or discounted. The simple, yet powerful formula of inspiration, support and education, became a breathe of fresh air for my community, turning a small 15 member group into a 400 member multi-level empowerment network that serves women of all cultures and income-levels.

I am a deeply committed person who seeks to use my experience, strength and optimism to support myself and others in removing blocks that prevent health and well-being. It is my belief that loving-kindness, respect , inclusiveness and practical life skills are the roots that nourishes the flowers of health and well-being. I am committed to learning more about living from those “roots,” and sharing what I learn to support others in stepping into greater awareness and empowerment.
