Vice President, business development at Instivate
Greater Seattle Area
I've joined the team at Instivate to help build a platform that allows anyone to instantly launch their own neighborhood blog and enable a geographic community to share news, events, and organize themselves online.
I continue to operate Capitolhillseattle.com -- a community site and neighborhood blog dedicated to the Capitol Hill area of Seattle WA. It's a fun challenge in one of those fantastic defensible content niches still left on the Internet. Now, to sell enough ads to make it work!
I have been working with online content and analyzing its consumption for over 10 years. I started as a reporter at MSNBC way back in 96 and quickly found myself enmeshed in the measurement and production of great online experiences working with various Microsoft online entities including the gargantuan MSN.com. My interest in Web analytics led me to Project Gatineau, helping to create Microsoft's analytics platform for advertisers and content publishers. Itching to get back closer to the content side of things and, especially, return to my roots in local journalism, I left Microsoft in 2007 to launch a network of neighborhood blogs for Marchex. That project was amazingly fun but rather short lived -- we closed shop after only one year.
Now I'm out on my own trying to fit together the pieces of knowledge I've acquired into a viable small online content business. The new era of local, community driven online journalism is an amazing opportunity. While I am sometimes envious of the entrepreneurial era of Hearst, growing up in the era of Drudge is a fine consolation. There's much to be done, written and reported.
Journalism, local and micro content, Web analytics, competitive analysis, market segmentation, content programming analysis and optimization, thick skin, stubbornness, fishing machine.
