Judith Matz’s Summary

Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 25 years experience in the treatment of eating and weight issues and co-author of two books on these topics: The Diet Survivor's Handbook: 60 Lessons in Eating, Acceptance and Self-Care and Beyond a Shadow of a Diet: The Therapist's Guide to Treating Compulsive Eating. I use a non-diet approach to help people reconnect with their natural signals for hunger and satiation, and to learn how to manage emotional issues without overeating. I don't promise weight loss; I do promise a healthy relationship with food. In my private practice, I work with people both individually and in groups. I also offer supervision for mental health professionals interested in using the non-diet approach. As the Director of The Chicago Center for Overecoming Overeating, Inc., I offer workshops and presentations, and am a frequent speaker at conferences.

Judith Matz’s Experience

  • Director

Chicago Center for Overcoming Overeating, Inc.

    (Mental Health Care industry)

    January 1992Present (17 years 11 months)

We are dedicated to helping people end the preoccupation with food and weight, and instead learn how to have a healthy relationship with food and their bodies. We use a non-diet, health at every size approach that teaches people to end the deprivation of dieting. Instead, they become attuned/intuitive eaters, using internal, physical cues for hunger and satiation to guide them in deciding when, what and how much to eat. Imagine the freedom!

Services include individual and group counseling, as well as workshops and presentations for conferences and organizations.

  • Therapist

    Judith Matz, LCSW

    (Mental Health Care industry)

I provide individual and group counseling to help people end the preoccupation with food and weight. I use a non-diet approach to help people learn to become attuned/intuitive eaters; as they deal with emotional overeating, I work on a variety of issues including depression, anxiety, self-esteem and relationships.

This compassionate guide reaffirms that you haven't failed your diet; your diet has failed you. Each of the 60 lessons teaches how to experience a positive, satisfying relationship with food, the body, and ultimately oneself. Each lesson includes an activity to practice the concept and a quote that is humorous or inspirational

  • Beyond a Shadow of a Diet: The Therapist's Guide to Treating Compulsive Eating

    Judith Matz, LCSW

    (Mental Health Care industry)

    July 2004June 2009 (5 years )

Beyond a Shadow of a Diet is the first comprehensive book for professionals to address the dynamics and treatment of compulsive eating. Drawing from the mountain of research indicating that diets don't work but actually contribute to the diet-binge cycle, this powerful book presents a sound method of solving, rather than controlling, compulsive eating, enabling people to find freedom from preoccupation with food and weight. Includes case studies and encourages readers to explore their own attitudes toward food, weight and dieting.
