Jim Scheinman’s Experience

  • Founder and Managing Director

    Maven Ventures, LLC.

    (Internet industry)

    November 2008Present (9 months)

I founded Maven Ventures LLC to help companies achieve their dreams and act as board member, investor and/or advisor.
I'm currently working with seven internet companies in many capacities including helping with strategic direction, angel and venture capital fundraising, social networking strategies, viral marketing, sales and business development. The companies I work with are mostly in the consumer internet space and are generally early stage, though not all of them fit this bill. The seven companies are: Birthdayalarm, MocoSpace, SocialGold, eons, ContextOptional, Paglo and WangYou. Tribunl, a leading social application development company and one of the first companies I worked with was successfully acquired by RockYou in 2008.

  • Entrepreneur in Residence

    Charles River Ventures

(Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Venture Capital & Private Equity industry)

    October 2007October 2008 (1 year 1 month)

As an EIR, I worked with the CRV partners to uncover new investments in the following areas: consumer Internet, social networking, social media, online advertising, casual gaming and virtual worlds. I also advised several of the firm's portfolio companies. At the completion of my EIR, I decided that rather than starting my own company right now and/or taking a CEO role at a portfolio company, that at least for the next several years, I would prefer to continue helping companies by taking advising roles and/or a board seat for equity, and in some cases also being an angel investor.

I headed up business and corporate development at Friendster and was responsible for all significant partnerships and mergers and acquisition discussions. I created Friendster's pioneering business model of engagement marketing generating significant revenues resulting in profitability. My engagement marketing business model serves as the cornerstone for all of the successful marketing campaigns on social networking sites today like MySpace, Facebook and Bebo.

I headed up a team of 50 business development, account management, sales and marketing professionals for a $2Billion public GE company. I started at snap.com and grew the team as the company merged with Xoom.com and went public as NBCi. It was a roller-coaster ride from the birth of the internet bubble to the ultimate and unfortunate pop. But what a ride it was, and the lessons learned gives me a rare and invaluable perspective as we enter into the wonderful web 2.0 world of social networking!
