Over the years I've managed consulting practices of varying sizes from 4 to over 20. They've had different names but they have almost always revolved around Enterprise Content Management (ECM) technologies such as content management, web content management, collaboration, workflow, portals, and search.
The key for me seems to be helping business people solve problems with technology, particularly when a human-to-human process is involved. My work also seems to consistently revolve around managing unstructured data--I'm typically working with a "rich content store" rather than a relational database.
For the last several years my technical focus has been on Alfresco and Open Source Content Management. I am a very active member of the Alfresco community, writing extensively on the topic at my blog, http://ecmarchitect.com, and speaking at events around the world. I've done numerous open source content management projects for clients and firmly believe that open source offers a viable alternative to commercial offerings for clients of all size regardless of industry.
In 2007 I received Alfresco's Community Contributor of the Year Award for my work on the blog and other contributions. In 2008 I wrote the Alfresco Developer Guide (Packt Publishing) and won Packt's Author of the Year Award for that work.
Prior to my focus on open source, I specialized on Documentum, but I have also worked on ECM technologies from vendors like IBM, Interwoven, Autonomy, and Lotus Notes/Domino.
