Emerging Media Coordinator, Defense Information School
Washington D.C. Metro Area
Since college, I have delved into positions that expanded my expertise at communication.
Starting with video during college as a program of study and freelance, I then moved to freelance web and graphic design after graduating. After getting a film company off the ground, I enlisted in the Army where I became a print journalist, focusing on writing and photography.
After a few years in the Army as a journalist, I was invited to return to our sole school for military journalists and visual communicators to be a teacher of grammar and graphic design. I was able to earn high marks for my teaching methods by absorbing the experience and techniques from the cadre of professionals at the school.
My knowledge of social media created an opportunity for me to join the ongoing military communication revolution. I have spoken at multiple seminars and symposiums for individual military branches, DoD and multiple federal agencies; speaking on social media in external (Web 2.0) and internal (Enterprise 2.0) communication.
Eventually I hope to utilize my varied communication background and managerial experience as a non-commissioned officer to effectively create, manage and/or produce content for a company or government agency.

January 2009 — Present (11 months)
I establish and maintain contacts with the Department of Defense New Media Directorate and subsequent military branch-specific emerging media shops. I interface with existing and new branch-specific emerging media outlets and meet with military representatives to determine how the Defense Information School can best meet the training needs of new military-affiliated public affairs professionals. I author new curriculum content to train staff and students on emerging media trends. I also am tasked with assisting with developing new internal content-management platforms to better leverage collaborative documents and emerging media trends in the workplace, improving efficiency and cutting operation costs.

I am an instructor at the joint-service Defense Information School. I teach classes of 10-20 students the basic writing skills necessary to function as journalists in the military. Our Basic Public Affairs Specialist - Writer class is a three-month course that covers grammar, news and feature story structures, photography, layout and design, culminating in a final project where the class designs and produces a mock newsletter.

January 2007 — June 2007 (6 months)
In January I became the only public affairs professional for my brigade. In addition to my old duties, I took on more staff-level responsibilities--briefing the colonel, interfacing with his staff, providing presentations and tracking new taskings from my commander. I was responsible for designing the unit branding used in letterheads and presentations. I designed large posters hung in the halls of our various headquarter buildings, used to highlight the accomplishments of the unit while in Iraq. I also undertook a program to take the command photos for every company, battalion and brigade leader and enlisted advisor.

I was one of two public affairs professionals operating with the 4th Sustainment Brigade, based out of Fort Hood, Texas. My duties included writing stories for the brigade, taking pictures as needed, coordinating the release of information to the U.S. Army Hometown News Program, and supporting tasks and efforts by our higher public affairs headquarters at the 4th Infantry Division.

Eventually I became the editor for the news and leisure sections for "The Turret", the Fort Knox newspaper. I was responsible for laying out the pages in those sections, incorporating the advertisements provided by our printer, interfacing with the pagination staff, ensuring reporters were covering their assigned stories. I also wrote stories to support those sections, edited and enhanced photos and conceptualized illustrative and creative packaging for feature stories.

As a new journalist, I was responsible for covering the stories assigned to me by my editors. I would research, conduct interviews, and establish times to take photographs for the assigned stories. After gathering all information and materials, I would prepare the story for review by my editors. I also spent significant time with Adobe programs that helped me edit and enhance graphics and photographs.
