Senior Software Architect ASP.NET / C# / GIS and technical specialist at Vicrea
Utrecht Area, Netherlands
As senior software architect, my tasks are mainly designing and creating web based geopspatial systems. My primary tool and platform is ASP.NET/C#. I call myself "Developer++". I can design, but I can make it work as well. And I always strive to make complex technologies simpler, enabling fellow developers to use high-end stuff in a simple way, without having to understand all the details.
I prefer to work in a professional environment with enough breathing space for individual creativity. I like to try out new technologies and to push the envelope of what is technically possibly to achieve a satisfying result. Helping youngsters to learn the ropes of the job is something I enjoy. Amongst colleagues I think cooperation works far better than competetiveness.
I like to work on projects with close customer contacts but definately DON'T like to work in full time body shopping environments. I don't like maintance jobs either: I am primarily a creator and an inventor.
Currently my I work in a product development setting, and my main line of work is a product called GisLoket, a fast-developing geospatial web application for municipalities to take communication and cooperation between city and with citizens to a whole new level.
ASP.NET/C#, Web Services, ASP.NET AJAX, CSLA, Oracle (Spatial), Google Maps, OpenLayers, UMN MapServer, dabbled a bit into Virtual Earth, Silverlight and Windows Mobile .Net development.
Knowlegde of local governemental processes and informational needs
Ability to hear a customer say what he/she WANTS and determine what he/she actually NEEDS, sometimes even out-thinking them.
I have been said to write technical documents and designs that are so clear that even a manager can read them ;-)

Designing and developing (mostly web) applications in a GIS environment, targeted specifically to the needs of local governmental organizations (i.e. municipalities), usually in close contact with the customer, utilizing ASP.NET, C# 2.0, Oracle Spatial and various web mapping engines, Google Maps and Virtual Earth.
Introduced prototype-based developement with close customer interaction as a way to succesfully deliver web applications

Developing and maintaining a 'production street' based upon Java/XSL to create HTML from XML created from SGML for Kluwer. The company's main business was 'body shopping' - after 9/11 and the simultaneous dot-com-bust assignments dried up, I missed GIS too much and I decided to return in the field. It was short but I learned a lot. Be Value was aquired by Ordina in january 2007.

August 1992 — August 2001 (9 years 1 month)
Application development from junior to senior positions in a GIS environment, working on and with Intergraph software and MicroStation. Roles varied from junior application engineer to (ulitimately) senior technical project leader, when I directed a team of 5 people in a large UNIX to Windows/VB project at PTT (currentely KPN) Telecom. This was the place where I learned the ropes of the job and I still have fond memories, especially of the general atmosphere and a lot of co-workers.
In 2004 ISIS was aquired by Bentley Systems and has ceased to exist as a separate entity.

Gardening (esp hardy geraniums and carnivorous plants), photography, baking bread, making cakes. Favorite song: "Englishman in New York" by Sting because it describes perfectly how I feel most of the time.
