Joost van Schaik’s Summary

As senior software architect, my tasks are mainly designing and creating web based geopspatial systems. My primary tool and platform is ASP.NET/C#. I call myself "Developer++". I can design, but I can make it work as well. And I always strive to make complex technologies simpler, enabling fellow developers to use high-end stuff in a simple way, without having to understand all the details.

I prefer to work in a professional environment with enough breathing space for individual creativity. I like to try out new technologies and to push the envelope of what is technically possibly to achieve a satisfying result. Helping youngsters to learn the ropes of the job is something I enjoy. Amongst colleagues I think cooperation works far better than competetiveness.

I like to work on projects with close customer contacts but definately DON'T like to work in full time body shopping environments. I don't like maintance jobs either: I am primarily a creator and an inventor.

Currently my I work in a product development setting, and my main line of work is a product called GisLoket, a fast-developing geospatial web application for municipalities to take communication and cooperation between city and with citizens to a whole new level.

  • Senior Application Developer

    Be Value

    September 2001April 2002 (8 months)

    Developing and maintaining a 'production street' based upon Java/XSL to create HTML from XML created from SGML for Kluwer. The company's main business was 'body shopping' - after 9/11 and the simultaneous dot-com-bust assignments dried up, I missed GIS too much and I decided to return in the field. It was short but I learned a lot. Be Value was aquired by Ordina in january 2007.

  • Junior -> Technical Consultant

    (Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Computer Software industry)

    August 1992August 2001 (9 years 1 month)

    Application development from junior to senior positions in a GIS environment, working on and with Intergraph software and MicroStation. Roles varied from junior application engineer to (ulitimately) senior technical project leader, when I directed a team of 5 people in a large UNIX to Windows/VB project at PTT (currentely KPN) Telecom. This was the place where I learned the ropes of the job and I still have fond memories, especially of the general atmosphere and a lot of co-workers.
    In 2004 ISIS was aquired by Bentley Systems and has ceased to exist as a separate entity.
