There are many "Social Media Experts" who are often kids who know it's a catch phrase they can exploit. Many have no real understanding of marketing they just figure they've spent most of there day on Myspace so now they think they are an "expert". Others are geeks who are so buried in the little details of advance usage they forget your customers (and you) don't benefit from such.
I have real experience in marketing. I sit on the Colorado Springs EDC's Marketing Committee. I've used Social Media to grow the Colorado Young Professionals, DriveRightPassLeft.com, and others over the years. I've taught people at the EDC, Business Journal, and Leadership Pike's Peak how to use Facebook to their advantage. I'm not a casual user.
I like to look at what your current advertising goals are, what your current website does, your internal resources, and how you do business in general to make it all work together.

LEW Composites was the best manufacturer of bicycle wheels for road racing in the world. We had Pros BUY our wheels. I was head of customer service/wheel building and I also did a lot of the sales. While there I built the 2002 Women's World Champion's custom wheelset and I got our product into the largest bicycle parts distributer in the world. Financial and other issues caused the company to close about a month after I left. It was fun while it lasted and I got to live a dream.
