John is currently working on indexing technology for searching large datasets. He primarly focuses on improving bitmap index technology with compression, encoding and binning. He is the key developer of FastBit bitmap indexing software <sdm.lbl.gov/fastbit>, which has been used in a number of applications including High-Energy physics <tinyurl.com/2eznlk, tinyurl.com/27pdh2>, combustion <scidacreview.org/0602/html/data.html>, network security <sdm.lbl.gov/fastbit/applications.html>, and query-driven visualization <vis.lbl.gov/Research/Dex>.
John has also been working on a number of scientific computing projects including developing Thick-Restart Lanczos (TRLan) algorithm for solving eigenvalue problems <lbl.gov/~kwu/trlan> and devicing statistical tests for deterministic effects in broad band time series <hdl.handle.net/2027.42/30448>.
John is a staff computer scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He also worked as a software engineer in medical device industry in the past.
