Over two decades of experience of research on the society, culture and politics of Central Asia and Islamic regions of Eurasia. Total of over 5 years of field-based research in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Teaching courses on this region at Harvard University since 1993. Major focus on building the field, including key role in founding the Central Eurasian Studies Society (now over 1500 members). Frequently serving as consultant on social and political issues. Public speaking on contemporary Central Asia and Islam in Eurasia.
