President of OakTree Digital, Internet Development Agency
Portland, Oregon Area
John founded OakTree Digital in late 1992 with a desire to do great projects for great clients while simultaneously creating a healthy work environment for exceptional people. Much has changed in the business environment since then but the OakTree Digital culture of doing "whatever it takes to meet the client’s needs" (and still have fun) is going strong.
John earned a BA in Economics and an MBA in MIS from the University of Minnesota. He worked for Intel for fourteen years in product marketing and technical sales. For three years he was vice-president and managing editor of a Microsoft Windows software directory.
John's especially proud of two applications OakTree delivered:
The 2008 site for the Willamette Week Give!Guide collected over $800,000 for 55 local non-profits. This 50% increase over 2007 was unbelievable considering our economic times. A true testament to the great citizens of Portland.
The Alternate Format Ballot (AFB) used for the 2008 Oregon elections has truly touched people's lives in a positive way. The AFB is an HTML ballot used by voters with disabilities.
John also enjoys kicking 20-something's butt as the oldest member of his 3.5 USTA tennis team.
OakTree Digital is a full-service internet agency specializing in web based business process systems, health care applications, sales and marketing lead generation programs, (e-mail marketing, search engine optimization) and e-Learning tools and applications.

Our publication tracked Windows from it's 2.0 form through 3.1. Two highlights of that time were to be at the New York city launch of 3.0 and later to have Bill Gates hold up our publication at COMDEX and say "This is the greatest directory!"

September 1972 — September 1974 (2 years 1 month)
This University of Minnesota based research group focused on land use and urban planning. I was hired to write a terminal data input and data structure mapping program to be used to enter soil and forest types on top of existing land use data down to the parcel level (40 acres).
Hard to believe it now but I implemented the application in FORTRAN on a Control Data 3200 computer in the basement of Blegen Hall on the West Bank campus. The six foot high, twelve feet long transistor and wires computer had 128K of actual switching core memory. Pretty cool technology back then. We even took field trips to northern Minnesota to inspect actual land samples to see if the data was accurate. It was.
