"Food as medicine doc"

*I'm board-certified in internal medicine, a professionally trained chef and a New York Times best-selling author for RealAge and for ChefMD. I am lucky to co-host Lifetime TV's "Health Corner" Sunday mornings with Joan Lunden, and have every week since 2006 (over 100 shows!).

I am interested in the stories people tell. My work is now about the lives of health-conscious, food-loving, choice-interested people. My clinical nutrition practice, TV work, teaching, writing and cooking I do have people's stories at their heart.

How did I get to nutrition and cooking from ethics? I did the first postgraduate fellowship in clinical medical ethics, at the University of Chicago, founded the first community hospital clinical ethics center in the U.S. and wrote many papers and books.

But something was missing: I'd gained a lot of weight worrying about my work, and so, went to cooking school to learn how to make a healthful diet taste good...and to learn what to tell my patients. Now, I want to give people easy ways to control their lives with what they eat, make hospital food therapeutic, and much more, and finally can.

I graduated from the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago (a Le Cordon Bleu School), worked at Rick Bayless' Topolobampo once weekly for 4 years, and then taught the first cooking and nutrition course in the U.S. for medical students, at SUNY-Upstate with YOU Doc and RealAge Diet-co-author Michael Roizen, MD. My ChefMD’s Big Book of Culinary Medicine (Crown, 2008) reached the New York Times best-seller list, as did the RealAge Diet. It's still a blast!

    CHEF Clinic began as a research project in suburban Chicago. With grant support from the American Medical Association, it grew to a nationally recognized, research-based clinic and weight loss program. Clients have included RealAge, Caremark, Cigna, Kraft, more.

    Current research concerns include:
    *pediatric obesity;
    *disease management programs, especially obesity and diabetes;
    *corporate wellness and its ROI;
    *improving hospital, conference, hotel and resort-related meals.
