It's been and "interesting" journey to get me to where I am today.
After deciding to take one semester off from college before finishing my degree - it ended up being 12 years - I spent most of the 80's and 90's co-managing our family orchards and marketing operation with my father. (My degree is in Post-Industrial European History from a fairly traditional liberal art college. He had retired as an industrial engineer from Bethlehem Steel. It was an interesting combination.) Because of my involvement in agriculture I was nominated for, and accepted to the Pennsylvania Rural Leadership Program (RULE), a two year program funded by the State of Pennsylvania and run through Penn State University. After graduating I continued my involvement with RULE, first as a volunteer facilitator and then as a Board member.
In 2000, I came to the realization that I no longer wanted to be a full-time “farmer”. In the fall of that year I was hired as the Executive Director of Leadership Cumberland, a community based leadership development program based in Carlisle, Pa. Leadership Cumberland’s reputation for preparing business leaders for nonprofit volunteerism gave me great exposure to both of those worlds.
I’d like to say that 15 years of active involvement with leadership development programs has prepared me for the work I do now (I once calculated that I’ve observed close to 1000 hours of leadership presentations), and it is a major part, but just as important were the years working directly with customers who ranged from seniors looking for the perfect peach to major buyers looking for the perfect margin, and employees ranging from teenagers working their first summer job to seasonal workers looking for a better life for themselves and their families.
Team Building, Meeting Facilitation, Workshops on Leadership, Change, and Communications. I have worked with a number of nonprofit organizations, associations, and government agencies.
