Opening a brokerage account and funding it with the first bonus I earned after graduating from Columbia enabled me to discover my true passion in life: equity investing. My evenings and weekends quickly became dedicated to researching investment ideas and managing my modest portfolio. While the diligence and strategic analysis skills developed while working at Digital Power guided me, more importantly, I learned by doing and endeavored to never make the same mistake twice.
Looking back, the morning I heard on CNBC that my largest holding, United Defense, was being acquired by BAE was the day I knew I wanted to work within the investment management industry. After leaving Digital Power, the flexibility of being an independent consultant allowed me to spend more time thinking about the markets and where they were heading; learning about what drives the macro picture and finding and testing ideas and connections; delving into sectors that interested me and identifying potential investments from trade publications, daily experience or other sources; building valuation models of attractive targets; and buying and selling mostly small and mid-cap value stocks. I turned my portfolio over less than 1x/year.

I was retained by advanced security technology-focused venture capital funds and firms. Among other accomplishments, I:
- Co-managed a VC client's due diligence review of eight security technology companies
- Authored four proprietary reports on security technology market segments that comprehensively assessed firm strategy and growth potential, customer buying decisions, and government initiatives
- Was retained by two early-stage companies to develop venture dollar
capture strategies and lead initial outreach.

Digital Power is a security technology-focused VC/PE sub-fund of Wexford Capital, a $5B hedge fund. I was one of three non-partner professionals responsible for deal sourcing, due diligence (done internally), and portfolio monitoring. During my tenure, we shifted strategy and fully-acquired 16 companies in about eight months and folded them into ICx Technologies (NASDAQ: ICXT). It was a phenomenal experience.
