Joel Litman’s Summary

If there were one way to summarize how my career has evolved, it’s in the interrelationship of business strategy, performance, and valuation. This discipline seems to have applied equally well to money management, investment banking, and management consulting.

As a Managing Director at Equity Analysis & Strategy, I enjoy working with a team focused on uncovering significant stock market mispricings. When the underlying value of the business greatly differs from the embedded expectations in the stock price, the probability for positioning for out-sized returns is highest. No market and no day is ever the same, and the teamwork involved in finding great investment opportunities is intellectually challenging and fulfilling.

I’ve enjoyed teaching at Universities and presenting with the CFA Institute’s Retained Speakers Bureau as well as other organizations in cities including Hong Kong, Tokyo, London, Dubai and all over North America. Venues have included Harvard Business School, London Business School, Wharton, and I am a Professor with the HULT International Business School based in Cambridge and also The Center for Strategy, Execution, and Valuation which I co-founded at the Kellstadt MBA Program in Chicago.

Some of my articles can be found in Harvard Business Review, Strategic Finance, and Insight, and many published under firms I’ve worked. Dr. Mark Frigo and I co-authored "DRIVEN: Business Strategy, Human Actions, and the Creation of Wealth," describing Return Driven Strategy©, a framework for business analysis and planning. The framework has received generous reviews from academicians, investors, and business leaders (www.returndriven.com).

Through the Foundation for Socioeconomic Advancement and Children International, I have worked to support under-developed communities and education, particularly in the Philippines. Of all pursuits, I suspect this one will be the most fulfilling.
