I run EcoLabs, an ecological literacy initiative, as a network and platform for designers and artists addressing sustainability and systemic change. I am a practicing graphic designer with a focus on sustainability communications. I have written in the design press for Creative Review, Eye Magazine, Varoom, IdN, and Design Week. I am also a PhD candidate at the University of Brighton.

Communicating Ecological Literacy
The design & dissemination of eco-literacy
Eco-literacy is an understanding of ecological systems and an awareness of how society operates within the natural imperatives of the ecosystem. It is a cognitive function that creates a conceptual basis for integrated thinking about sustainability. It is especially critical for designers, who frame content with representational media (and are in the business of influencing audiences with their work) to understand & apply these principles.

EcoLabs, an ecological literacy initiative, is a network for designers interested in sustainability. Presently we are working on the 2012 Imperative Teach-in, planned for October 2009. This event will aim to help students and lecturers engage with current environmental issues and understand how the design industry can help. Meanwhile we have a series of minor projects in the works including a Climate Road Show and a publication.

This practice-led project will create an original body of work that communicates eco-literacy. The project will develop from actual initiatives. The first of these projects will be a teach-in in 2009. The design industry could be an important player in the transition to a sustainable system – if we engage and develop a respect for the ecological systems that sustain life.
