Jonathan McCoy’s Summary

I'm a bit of a geek. It all started when my parents bought me a 486 computer with a 2400 baud modem. Do you remember the internet before graphical browsers? Its was all so simple back then - IRC, FTP, Telnet, e-mail and Lynx. I remember my mother's face the first time she discovered that she had to choose between windows, DOS and Linux when she booted up our home computer. I love learning new technologies, programming languages, novel gadgets and any technology that is innovative really - this, along with a deep interest in mathematics, led me to study electrical engineering.

My professional engineering experience in semiconductors was not the stuff of life-long happiness. It almost felt like being so functionally specific was actually getting in the way of all the learning I wanted to do. The best reality I could think of would be to have the means to learn, experiment and build pet projects all day long.

This independence led me quickly down a path of entrepreneurship. I've been lucky enough to be able to spend most of my professional career starting up companies and working on side projects that I am passionate about. I hope for this trend to continue for some time.

Today, I am primarily focused on what I think is one of the biggest problems facing all of us - information overload. I am deeply passionate about solving the problem of consistently defining meaning within information. And, I am convinced that when this problem is properly solved, it will change each of our lives for the better, in ways that we can not even imagine.

  • Founder

    Perception Labs

    (Computer Software industry)

    October 2006Present (2 years 10 months)

Currently in R&D, Perception Labs is developing a unique, patented technology to discover, analyze and simulate meaning in large sets of data. The company is using proprietary methods in combination with principles of information theory as the basis for defining the context of information.

The company's core belief is that a consistent and rigorous definition of context will allow for the incremental integration of data and domain expertise - 2 areas that overload knowledge workers in many diverse domains.

The company is seeking technical team members who share in this vision, as well as forward looking thinkers who see this problem in their own domain.

  • Investor / Advisor / Founder

    • Greenling Organics, founded in my very own garage in May, 2005, Greenling's mission is to bring local, organic food to central Texas consumers by leveraging an efficient distribution network. I helped provide the initial vision for the company and business model, and assisted as a co-founder for the first 6 months of operation.

    • Silas Corp is a partnership formed in 7/2005 to invest in on-demand restaurant delivery in central Austin. The company sold its first asset, LonghornDelivery.com in May, 2008.
