I have spent more than 14 years working in various capacities within the technology industry. I began my career in the early 90's working for various advertising agencies and doing freelance design/marketing work. Through this work, I became very familiar with the printing industry and the more technical aspects of computers and networks.
Through some chance opportunities and some great mentors, I found my way into the newspaper industry, first as a writer, then taking on a more technical role, transitioning newspapers and printing shops from cameras, strippers and plate burners to the new world of direct to plate systems and digital presses.
In the mid 90's I shifted my focus to specifically Apple product integration and the ever-closing gap of the print world and its transition to the Internet through content management systems.
In the late 90’s, I realized that the Internet was where my future rested, and set out to become an expert in the field. Leveraging my technical experience, I secured certifications from Apple, Microsoft and Adobe. I then moved to network infrastructure, web server platforms, public networks and all the many things that go into making an endeavor on the web successful.
Through actively participating in the open source projects like Joomla, Drupal, and OsCommerce, I grew to understand that the Internet is not just another touch point, it is a revolution in how humans will exist now and in the future.
I now have a clear expert understanding of web technologies like PHP, XHTML/CSS, and JavaScript. I participate in multiple open source communities, lead local technology initiatives and seek out new ways to engage people in the world of technology. Social networks, the semantic web and the revolution of the information age are reshaping who we are as a people. I want to be part of that change.
I can only hope that the next 50 years are exciting as the last 14 as I keep seeking higher ground in the world we live in.
