I'm interested in nearly all aspects of computing and networking. Because of this, I prefer working in small IT shops where I can try my hand at everything. I've been working with computers since 1979 so I have at least passing familiarity with just about anything computer- or network related, with the notable exception of artificial intelligence.
My goals are to continue working toward my CalPERS pension sometime in 2020-2030. (I have already wasted ~10 years working without pension benefits, lesson learned.) I'm not looking for a new position--I enjoy my current situation well enough that I bought a home close to my office at CSUS. I've been able to commute by bicycle since I moved, as I have access to shower facilities and a bike locker. Between an interesting job, my commute, retirement benefits, plus 5 weeks vacation (as well as 2.5 weeks of holidays and another 2.5 weeks of sick leave), it's highly unlikely that I will leave voluntarily! Of course, if you have an *even better* offer than this, I'd be happy to listen to it. ;)
If you're trying to reconnect with me and don't have my current email address, please send an email to jim.vanderveen+linkedin@owp.NO_SPAMcsus.edu (just remove NO_SPAM from the address).
I'm a renaissance man, not a specialist. Industries I've worked in include higher education, manufacturing, dental, construction management, and newspaper publishing software.
