Jesse Higman’s Summary
I have been impacted so profoundly by tragedy and great fortune that I began curiously studying the processes of life and how things happen. Following the evidence that certain actions produce beauty, I developed my own system of action painting using water as a medium. Because I am a quadriplegic, I work with other people to make my art. As the paintings have become larger in scale, the acts of collaboration have become the driving influences in the visual outcomes. I want to publicize these productions, pictures and experiences, and in the resulting conversations and outcomes, add again to my own understandings and art.
I developed artistically with musicians in the grunge movement of the early nineties. I began painting leather jackets and guitars, eventually creating artwork for music packaging, promotion and tours as bands were signed to major labels. Studying art english and philosophy at Eastern Washington University, I put my ideas into detailed illustrations and oil paintings. I took these paintings on Lollapalooza tours, into collections of popular musicians, the Rock and Roll Hall of fame and the Experience Music Project here in Seattle.
Where I get my ideas from and where I work to:
The moment is the center, the creation, where math will never be fast enough to describe the chaos until its effects are immediately shown. This is the now, the light, heat and intensity, the kiss of the universe where new things are born. Out from here is the becoming awareness, of something just now provoking questions and answers of logic, delineating, processing further out, into terra firma, assuming relative positions, out and out further from the center to the colder planets of facts, trivia, and gossip, all commenting in some way back on the origin. I am moved by images, ideas and people in culture that have this light, and to some degree the ones which make reference to it.
