A lot is going on in hospital care. Keywords are - amongst others - competition, new entrants in the market, cost cutting, financing based on outputs, and open market contracting. Health care providers must have a customer focus and have to be competitive, as continuity of their organization and its revenues can no longer be taken for granted. Knowledge of the market and customers is essential. Now that customers are becoming ever more assertive and capable of making their own choices it is necessary to bring them in and keep them.
These developments require a market reorientation and new hospital strategies. The purpose of this study was to provide further insight in the use of (strategic) marketing to support strategy development in Dutch hospitals.
